Rotary President’s February Message
Each of us has, at one time or another, been asked the question, what is Rotary? There are many ways to answer, depending on the questioner, the context, and the time available. The shortest and simplest answer is that Rotary is the world’s oldest service club organization. This is, of course, an accurate but necessarily incomplete response, for any true understanding of Rotary must include an explanation of how we in Rotary strive through our service to achieve more than the goal of each individual project. By working together in our clubs, our districts, and internationally, we strive to establish the simple foundations of a better society: friendship, trust, honesty, and hope. continued

Rotary Clubs in Haiti
Claude Surena, a member of the Rotary Club of Petion-Ville and president of the Haitian Medical Asscociation, is sheltering more than 100 people in his damaged home in Port-au-Prince. He is also leading the efforts of the 17 Haitian Rotary clubs to ensure that the ShelterBox containers will be deployed effectively to the thousands left homeless.
Shelterbox for Haiti
The Campbellton Rotary Club will be donating a ShelterBox for the relief effort in Haiti. Each Shelterbox cost $1,000.00 which includes delivery to the disaster site. Boxes are individually numbered so each box can be tracked and donors can know its final destination. In this case Haiti.
Each ShelterBox is a large, rugged, green plastic container that holds a 10-person tent and a range of other equipment. Shelter boxes are designed to include those items most required by the particular need. Each box is 23.7” (570mm) wide by 33.2” (842mm) long by 22.4” (602mm) deep – giving a capacity of 40.7gallons (185 litres). Fully packed, a box weighs between 110lbs and 130lbs (50 to 60kg).
In general, a typical box contents could include:
• Thermal blankets and insulated ground sheets
• Waterproof ponchos and bin bags
• A multi-fuel stove that can burn anything from diesel to old paint!
• Cooking pans, utensils, bowls and mugs
• Collapsible water containers and water purification tablets
• A basic tool kit – hammer, axe, saw, pliers, hoe head, trenching shovel, rope etc
• A small, children’s pack containing drawing books, crayons, pens etc.
With the assistance of individuals, families, businesses and not for profits more Shelter Boxes will be sent to those in need. For every $1,000.00 raised a Shelter Box will be sent.
